	Ndokette Session
2019 - 2020
	With&#38;nbsp;Ndokette Session,&#38;nbsp; Atelier Ndokette offers a journey into their daily lives where memories and artifacts intersect. The Ndokette is a tunic worn by women that is distinguished by its sewing, its materials and the way it is worn. 

The practice of the collective is close to the experience of the object and the knowledge of the gesture: of knowing and doing, that is to say, of craft. The craft represents this living memory where heritage, fashion and use meet.

Avec Ndokette Session, Atelier Ndokette propose un voyage dans un quotidien où souvenirs et artefacts se croisent. La Ndokette est une tunique portée par les femmes qui se distingue par sa couture, ses matériaux et la manière dont elle est portée. 

La pratique du collectif est proche de l'expérience de l'objet et de la connaissance du geste : du savoir et du faire, c'est-à-dire de l'artisanat. L'artisanat représente cette mémoire vivante où se rencontrent le patrimoine, la mode et l'usage.

	YUUXULs
2021 - on going
	Working with the artisans and fabrics revealed many memories and a deeper interest. We traced the material, the know-how, the places, and emotions.

YUUXUL ("shout" in Wolof) refers by its form to the wooden writing tablets. Emblem of transmission of knowledge, the latter has a central place in this installation. Thus, they are markers of a temporality that exceeds the periodicities: the times become only one.

Le travail avec les artisans et les tissus a révélé de nombreux souvenirs et un intérêt plus profond. Nous avons retrouvé la matière, le savoir-faire, les lieux et les émotions.

YUUXUL (“crie” en wolof) &#38;nbsp;fait référence par sa forme aux tablettes d’écriture en bois. Emblème de transmission de savoirs, ces-dernières ont une place centrale dans cette installation. Ainsi, elles sont marqueurs d’une temporalité qui dépasse les périodicités : les temps ne deviennent plus qu’un.

	Working with the artisans and fabrics revealed many memories and a deeper interest. We traced the material, the know-how, the places, and emotions.
Among those objects a very specific hand-woven cotton fabric caught our attention and resonated with us.&#38;nbsp;


Le travail avec les artisans et les tissus a révélé de nombreux souvenirs et un intérêt plus profond. Nous avons retrouvé la matière, le savoir-faire, les lieux et les émotions.

Parmi ces objets, un tissu de coton tissé à la main très spécifique a attiré notre attention et a résonné en nous.


	It is known as "rabbal" in Wolof or "sëru jare" or "leepi" in Pulaar. 
The leepi is known for its use in clothing and accessories making, for ceremonies as well as for moments of rituals and exchanges between individuals and families.
Having grown up with this fabric, it was always present around us and we've been having an unconscious conversation with it. We have seen them being used for different outfits and occasions. So these materials hold their own stories and memories. They constitute the archives and links between moments and thus provide information about certain contexts.We want to approach them in a way that inscribes our own stories.


By exploring what is intrinsically contained in the materials, we give them the attention they require.The materials (fabrics) we used to make our costumes become our support and receive the images they inspired.


Il est appelé "rabbal" en wolof ou "sëru jare" ou "leepi" en pulaar. 

Le leepi est connu pour son utilisation dans la confection de vêtements et d'accessoires, pour les cérémonies ainsi que pour les moments de rituels et d'échanges entre les individus et les familles.

Ayant grandi avec ce tissu, il a toujours été présent autour de nous et nous avons eu une conversation inconsciente avec lui. Nous les avons vus utilisés pour différentes tenues et occasions. Ces matériaux renferment donc leurs propres histoires et souvenirs. Ils constituent des archives et des liens entre les moments et fournissent ainsi des informations sur certains contextes. Nous voulons les approcher d'une manière qui inscrive nos propres histoires.
En explorant ce qui est intrinsèquement contenu dans les matériaux, nous leur accordons l'attention qu'ils requièrent. Les matériaux (tissus) que nous avons utilisés pour confectionner nos costumes deviennent notre support et reçoivent les images qu'ils ont inspirées.

	“Leepi jhedi” ( “cotton fabrics woven in seven strips" in pulaar) places “rabbal” as a primary support for experimenting and understanding the material. It happens through painting and also multimedia installation.
The idea is to embark on an exploration to discover the fabric and create new relationships with it. The gradations of colors remind us of this journey from universe to universe, with no perceptible border, nor time and order in the transition of the color. 
In this body of work, leppi become our canva. A canva already loaded with its own history. The goal here is to put our nuances, our imaginations and our aspirations without confusing the primary story, what we know of it anyway.


“Leepi jhedi” ("tissus de coton tissés en sept bandes" en pulaar) place le "rabbal" comme support principal pour expérimenter et comprendre le matériau. Cela se fait par le biais de la peinture et de l'installation multimédia.

L'idée est de s'embarquer dans une exploration pour découvrir le tissu et créer de nouvelles relations avec lui. Les dégradés de couleurs nous rappellent ce voyage d'univers en univers, sans frontière perceptible, ni temps ni ordre dans la transition de la couleur. 

Dans cet ensemble de travaux, les leppi deviennent nos canva. Un canva déjà chargé de sa propre histoire. Le but ici est de mettre nos nuances, nos imaginations et nos aspirations sans brouiller l'histoire première, ce que nous en connaissons en tout cas.

Working on "Ndokette Session" was first of all a way to look in detail at the Ndokette but also at many other clothes with which we grew up, that we have at specific times or that have been with us throughout our lives.

Travailler sur “Ndokette Session” a d'abord été une façon de s’intéresser en détails à la Ndokette mais aussi sur beaucoup d'autres vêtements avec lesquels nous avons grandi, que nous avons à des moments précis ou qui nous ont accompagnés tout au long de notre vie.

	NDKT NJAXASS, 2022&#38;nbsp;


Within the collective, Ibrahima Ndome integrates to his practice the collection and the archiving of clothes first by passion and which today are used for his research. Some of these clothes thus allowed us to realize the Ndokette Njaxass in collaboration with Daaru Njaxass in Dakar. 

The Njaxass restores and gives life to the clothes by reuniting them. They are unraveled, cut into patterns or not, and then arranged to recover and reuse as much of the surface as possible.

Au sein du collectif, &#38;nbsp;Ibrahima Ndome intègre à sa pratique la collection et l'archivage de vêtements d'abord par passion et qui aujourd'hui servent à ses recherches.Certains de ces vêtements donc nous ont permis de réaliser la Ndokette Njaxass en collaboration avec Daaru Njaxass à Dakar.
&#38;nbsp;Le Njaxass restaure et redonne ainsi vie aux vêtements en les réunissant. Ils sont défaits, découpés en motif ou non, puis agencés pour en récupérer et en réutiliser le plus de surface possible.

	NDOMBO BAAT YA, 2022

For those pieces that we get by having unraveled the clothes and recovering the fabrics, it is about the embroidery decorating the clothes, "daamina" in Wolof. The embroidery pieces are visible at the level of the collar, sleeves, and pockets or when we go around the big boubou. 
The embroidery appears to us first of all as a signature, an (almost) final touch, that of the tailor, of the whole of his workshop itself. In this continuity, it resonates in our practice as a calligraphy, a handwritten trace in resonance with the njaxass.


Pour ces pièces qu'on obtient en ayant défaits les vêtements et récupérer les tissus, il s'agit des broderies ornant les vêtements, "daamina" en wolof. Les pièces de broderie sont visibles au niveau du col, des manches, des poches ou lorsqu’on fait le tour du grand boubou.La broderie nous apparait d'abord comme une signature, une touche (presque) finale, celle du tailleur, de l'ensemble de son atelier même. Dans cette continuité, elle résonne dans notre pratique comme une calligraphie, une trace manuscrite en résonance avec le njaxass.

Atelier Ndokette is a transdisciplinary art collective working in the intersection of photography, textile and installations.
Atelier Ndokette has started after we have worked on our first self-built project (Ndokette Session) in 2019. This project represents an open and ongoing conversation that tackles subjects like communities and individuals.Atelier Ndokette has become a collaborative working space and an open creation environment. 
The collective works are articulated around research projects and also commissioned works of different scales.
In the collective, Safi Niang (right) develops a practice around textiles and painting. She works with colours and textures to depict landscapes between the material and the immaterial.

Souleymane Bachir Diaw (middle) is a fine art photographer who is primarily interested in personal and collective narratives in the fascinating complexity of their connections.

Ibrahima Ndome (left) has a keen interest in clothing and textiles and mostly the emotions they convey. Therefore they became his main mediums to which he associate other influences (from dancing to poetry).
They associate their practices to work together with a same medium or in a transdisciplinary approach where their different mediums interact.

Ibrahima Ndome is a Senegalese born textile and movement artist. Based in Dakar since 2013, he’s one of the members of the art collective Atelier Ndokette.
His practices revolve around research to answer his inner life questions, in which a combination of different mediums symbolize the tools to discover answers. He started expressing himself in front of the camera as a model and has been part of international fashion shows, campaigns and editorials.
But modeling isn’t enough for Ibrahima, so he decided to explore what happens behind the camera. He then pushed his sense of style to become a stylist and has worked in several commercials, editorials and visual art projects.
Later on, styling turned into costume design. In collaboration with craftsmen, he now experiments design from abstract to concrete.His work has been shown at AKAA FAIR 2021 after a residency at Cité Internationale Des Arts, after winning the&#38;nbsp; first edition of Ellipse Art projects in 2021 within the collective Atelier Ndokette, at the Off Dakar biennale in 2022. In 2022, the collective presented Tocutugol alongside the Dakar French institute.
In Fashion, his work consists of bringing material and immaterial resources in visual and art projects through modeling, styling/fashion consultancy or often both at the same time:

Milan Fashion week 2020 for Marni, 2019 African official football cup campaign, Vogue Ukraine with Mati Diop, Baax Studio campaign shoot, … 
Today, Ibrahima is a textile and a movement artist who combines fashion, textile and movements through dance.
Through movement, he finds ways to write with his body and through textile materials.. It allows him&#38;nbsp; to rehabilitate his own and helps him feel in tune with his senses.
Textile is for Ibrahima a “blank” support already loaded with a lot of untarnished and nuanced stories that require more attention before its usage in his artistic practices.

It takes me everywhere, allowing me to introspect and ‘outro-spect’ alternatively, actively and practically. It requires time and space.
I am unschooled, raw and organic with it, but along the way, doubts and unknown are turned into Movement.
